INTRODUCTION


Ulashi Sreejony Sangha (USS) is a non-profit, non-partisan, non-governmental voluntary organization and started its activities from 10th January 1984. It was established as a result of Ulashi Sharothi Jodunathpur Project started in 1st November 1976 in 8 unions situated in the both sides of Betrabati River, Jessore and was supported by the Government of Bangladesh. The main objectives of the project was to re-excavate the river; increase the production of IRRI rice by ensuring sufficient irrigation; facilitate diversified agro production; create employment opportunities through different projects and ensuring voluntary participation of land less peoples, local farmers, fishermen, students, teachers and other peoples from different professions. After completion of the project, Ulashi Sreejony Sangha (USS), a people’s organization was formed to sustain the impact of the project. Gradually it becomes a Non-Government Organization (NGO) after getting registration from appropriate authority and expanded its direct activities in greater Khulna division in 1985.

The activities and the achievement of the project were praised worthy by the national and international media, donor agency and development partners.

SECTORAL EXPERIENCES

 

USS follows integrated participatory approaches focusing on resource based rural poor, urban slum group, climatically vulnerable people by raising their awareness, building capacity on climate change, disaster preparedness, health, hygiene, sanitation,


To address, facilitate and promote Human Rights & Advocacy, USS implemented following projects for the disadvantaged and underprivileged people of the society - Raising Peoples Voice for Climate Justice Supported by Campaign for Sustainable Rural Livelihoods project, Improvement Lives in Banishanta, Democratic Budget Movement.

Under this sector, USS implemented several projects to contribute to achieve SDGs. The most recent interventions are - Jute: Empowered Women Ensured Livelihoods , Poverty Reduction by Increasing the Competitiveness of Enterprise (PRICE), Cereal System Initiative for South Asia in Bangladesh (CSISA-BD),

USS believes that education is the key factor to build a worthy Nation. Considering this USS has taken different initiatives in its lifetime. Few examples are - Basic Literacy Program, Creating an Enabling Environment for the Children with Disabilities (CECD), Amar Adhiker Campaign (a campaign for ensuring quality primary education for the children).

USS has the principal to think Globally and act locally. Climate change and its impact is a global issue and USS is also contributing to address this continuously. Some examples of its interventions are - Enhancing resilience livelihood, Improved resilience of small farmers through increase access to market and adaptive practices,

Gender and women development is a cross-cutting issue for USS. It continuously giving emphasis and incorporating this across its interventions. USS has also required policies to reduce gender discrimination among the society.

indigenous knowledge based adaptive agriculture and microcredit support to enhance their livelihood status. Besides, child sponsorship, NFE for children, poverty alleviation and mobilizing community to ensure human rights in all aspects.

 
 

Natural water resources conservation is a burning issue today. USS works on it and implemented Wetland based people’s livelihood security project in Narail District where numbers of research publication were published and circulated among development sectors actors for further research.

Natural calamity is a common phenomenon in Bangladesh. Particularly for the people who lives in the coastal region of the country. Every year Bangladesh is suffering from different natural disaster and also losing life and assets which destroying all the development efforts and pushing people to vulnerable situation.

Research is an integral part of designing new projects and after impacts of any project. USS is following this principal for all of its new and completed interventions. USS has a large number of publications on different development issues like – climate change, wetland and river water conservation, adaptive livelihoods etc.

Sound health and nutrition is a basic condition for sustainable livelihoods. Considering this USS provide health supports directly and through linkages with the service providers like – Government and NGOs. USS provides nutritional education in most of its livelihoods programs for women and children. This is also a cross-cutting issue of USS.

As a development organization, USS have a dream to sustain the organization itself and its Self Help Groups (SHGs). To facilitate the process, USS has taken several initiatives to generate sufficient revenues for the organization but still it is a long way to go. Only small scale Microcredit program is working for this. USS anticipates that development partners will come forward to support this endeavor for its sustainability.

DEVELOPMENT APPROACH AND STRATEGY

 

The principal strategy of USS in managing programs is participatory development approach the stakeholders are directly involved as development


  • Bottom up, participatory and flexible development approaches, addressing the necessity and objectives of development partners where the overall organizational strategies and goal is followed.
  • Participatory research is an integral part of USS’s development activities where the development partners identify their own agendas for action in designing and implementing programs for their own development.
  • The underprivileged and disadvantaged women, children, adolescents and persons with disability are the major priority groups of USS.

  • USS mostly follows the Self Help Group (SHG) approach for development interventions where beneficiaries are the main decision maker for their sustainable livelihoods and SHG ownerships.
  • USS design and operates development programs for both in rural and urban areas.
  • Emphasis will be given on climate change and adaptions for continuous promotion and mainstreaming them for sustainability.
  • Increased importance on reducing financial dependency to achieve sustainability. USS is striving for increased self-sufficiency of individuals and the organization as well through different measures towards cost-effective income generating ventures.
