Bangladesh’s progress towards the MDGs has been widely celebrates, yet rural poverty levels remain high. COVID-19 is expected to further causes massive job losses which will worsen inequality and poverty especially among poor and marginalized. Women are furthermore discriminated and disadvantaged in other areas of life. Women’s high rates of poverty and discrimination are continuing due to persistent patriarchal attitudes and discriminatory laws, wage discrimination, high rates of malnutrition among women, and low female participation in the political life. Female politicians can not influence decision making processes to a desired degree due to several factors like lack of education, restricted mobility, socio-cultural or religious barriers and autocratic behavior of male counterpart. Lack of access to local and national governance in turn limits women’s ability to benefit from public services.
To address the above issues, USS has been implementing a project namely-Empowering women’s CSOs to ensure good governance (WEE) project supported by European Commission and Traidcraft Exchange (TX). The project has been started since February 2021 and are implementing Bhanga, Boalmari & Faridpur sadar Upazila under Faridpur district and Jhikorgacha, Monirampur & Jashore sadar Upazila under Jashore district and Dacop Upazila under Khulna district. Major activities of this project are- Develop grassroots women CSOs to collaborate effectively with local govt. on policy dialogue and implementation, promote women’s empowerment and gender equality and participation of marginalized women in economic & social development processes. Project has been organizing training of women CSOs on gender & rights, workshop for women CSOs on identification & addressing for women CSOs. Sensitization workshops for govt. officials and community leaders on women’s rights, linkage building with local govt. community leaders & women, village campaign to understand women on rights and access to services to CSOs.

Women’s socio economic barriers plays a significant role against establishing women’s equal rights. Women’s are being deprived from different spheres of life. This simply means that women’s have less power, property, status and privilege than that of man. Birth of male child is welcome on the other hand female child is considered as a curse. Women considered as the reproductive tool of the society and encouraged to keep themselves busy with household activities. In order to promote women empowerment USS has undertaken a project namely Jute: Empowered Women Ensured Livelihoods (JEWEL) Project, financed by Traidcraft and big lottery from 2015 to 2019 at Faridpur (Faridpur sadar, Bhanga and Boalmari Upazila) and Jashore district (Monirampur Upazila).
